Sri Lanka Frogmouth

Batrachostomus moniliger

A nocturnal oddity endemic to Sri Lanka and India's Western Ghats, the Sri Lanka Frogmouth has a wide, flattened bill and enormous eyes adapted for hunting insects in the dark. Its mottled brown plumage blends seamlessly with tree bark during daytime roosting. Pairs often sit pressed together on a branch, resembling a broken stump.

Fun Fact

Sri Lanka Frogmouths build the smallest nests for their body size — a tiny pad of moss and lichen.
