Great Potoo
Nyctibius grandis
Masters of camouflage, Great Potoos spend the day perched motionless on broken tree stumps, perfectly mimicking dead wood. Found in forests from southern Mexico through South America, they emerge at night to hunt large insects and bats. Their haunting, descending moaning call is one of the most eerie sounds of the tropical night.
Fun Fact
Potoos don't build nests — they balance a single egg on a broken branch stump.
