Oilbird
Steatornis caripensis
The only nocturnal fruit-eating bird in the world, the Oilbird navigates pitch-black caves using echolocation — a rare ability among birds. Its rich brown plumage is spotted with white, and it has large, dark eyes adapted for low light. Found from Trinidad to Bolivia, it roosts in large cave colonies and forages for oil palm fruits by night.
Fun Fact
Oilbirds navigate dark caves using echolocation, making them one of the few birds to do so.
