Tawny Frogmouth
Podargus strigoides
Often mistaken for an owl, the Tawny Frogmouth is actually a nightjar relative with mottled grey-brown plumage that perfectly mimics a broken tree branch. Found across Australia, it sits motionless during the day with its bill pointed skyward in a dead-branch pose. At night, it snaps up insects, frogs, and small mammals with its wide, gaping mouth.
Fun Fact
Often mistaken for owls, Tawny Frogmouths camouflage as broken tree branches during the day.
