Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicularia

A small, long-legged owl of open grasslands and deserts, the Burrowing Owl has sandy-brown, spotted plumage and bright yellow eyes. Unusually for an owl, it is active by day and nests underground, often taking over abandoned prairie dog or ground squirrel burrows. It stands sentinel at the burrow mouth, bobbing when alarmed.

Fun Fact

It lines its burrow with animal dung, which lures dung beetles right to the doorstep for an easy meal.
