Scarlet Tanager
Piranga olivacea
The male Scarlet Tanager looks like a living flame — brilliant red with jet-black wings — perched high in the deciduous forest canopy of eastern North America. Despite its dazzling color, it can be surprisingly hard to spot among sun-dappled leaves. It molts to olive-yellow for its winter migration to South American forests.
Fun Fact
Despite their brilliant red plumage, Scarlet Tanagers are surprisingly hard to spot because they forage high in the forest canopy, hidden among the leaves.
