Baltimore Oriole
Icterus galbula
The male Baltimore Oriole blazes with flame-orange and black plumage, a beacon among the treetops of eastern North America each spring. Females weave intricate hanging pouch-nests from plant fibers suspended from branch tips. Named after Lord Baltimore's heraldic colors, this neotropical migrant winters in Central America and northern South America.
Fun Fact
Baltimore Orioles were named for Lord Baltimore, whose family coat of arms featured the same orange and black colors as the bird's plumage.
