A crisp little sparrow of forest floors and winter feeders, the Dark-eyed Junco wears a slate-gray hood over a clean white belly, flashing white outer tail feathers as it flushes. It comes in several regional forms, from slate-colored in the East to rusty-flanked Oregon birds in the West. Flocks descend on backyards across North America as the weather turns cold.
Fun Fact
Nicknamed 'snowbirds,' juncos often appear at feeders just as the first cold snaps of winter arrive.
