Northern Cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

The male Northern Cardinal is a brilliant scarlet red with a pointed crest and black face mask, while females wear elegant tawny-brown plumage. Common throughout the eastern United States and into Mexico, they frequent backyard feeders year-round. Cardinals are among the few North American songbirds where both sexes sing.

Fun Fact

Female cardinals sing from the nest, possibly to tell the male to bring more food.
