Common Chaffinch

Fringilla coelebs

Among the most abundant birds in Europe, the male Common Chaffinch is a handsome finch with a blue-gray crown, pinkish face and breast, and bold white shoulder patches and wing bars. It forages on the ground for seeds and insects, often in loose flocks in winter. Its bright, tumbling song ends in a cheerful flourish.

Fun Fact

The Chaffinch camouflages its neat cup nest with lichen and spider silk to match the branch it sits on.
