Great Tit

Parus major

Bold, adaptable, and widespread from Europe to Japan, the Great Tit is easily identified by its black head, white cheeks, and bright yellow underparts bisected by a black central stripe. It readily visits garden feeders and has famously learned to open milk bottle caps. Its two-note "teacher-teacher" call is a familiar woodland sound.

Fun Fact

Great Tits are one of the few bird species observed using tools — pulling up strings hand-over-hand to reach food dangling at the end.
