Phainopepla
Phainopepla nitens
Silky black with a spiky crest and ruby-red eyes, the male Phainopepla is a desert specialist found in the arid Southwest of the United States and Mexico. It is uniquely adapted to feed on desert mistletoe berries, digesting the pulp and spreading the sticky seeds. Remarkably, it breeds twice yearly in two completely different habitats.
Fun Fact
Phainopeplas are one of the only North American birds that breed twice each year in completely different habitats — desert scrub in spring and oak woodland in summer.
