Sociable Weaver
Philetairus socius
The Sociable Weaver of southern Africa's Kalahari builds the largest communal nest structures of any bird — massive thatched apartment complexes in trees that can house over 100 breeding pairs and last for generations. These haystack-like structures are so heavy they occasionally topple trees. Each pair maintains its own entrance and chamber within the shared structure.
Fun Fact
Sociable Weavers build the largest nests of any bird — massive communal structures housing 100+ families.
