European Nightjar

Caprimulgus europaeus

Superbly camouflaged in mottled grey and brown, the European Nightjar is nearly invisible resting on the forest floor by day. At dusk, it takes to the wing with silent, buoyant flight to hawk moths and beetles. Found across Europe and western Asia in summer, its eerie, sustained churring song on warm evenings is a hallmark of heathlands.

Fun Fact

Nightjars were once called 'goatsuckers' from the myth that they drank milk from goats at night.
