Common Swift
Apus apus
Built for a life on the wing, the Common Swift can fly for months without landing, eating, sleeping, and even mating in midair. Dark brown all over with a pale throat, it breeds across Europe and Asia before migrating to sub-Saharan Africa. A single bird may fly millions of miles in its lifetime.
Fun Fact
Common Swifts can stay airborne for 10 months straight — eating, sleeping, and mating on the wing.
