House Finch
Haemorhous mexicanus
A cheerful and adaptable songbird, the House Finch features a rosy-red head and breast on males, with brown streaking across both sexes. Originally native to western North America, it was introduced to the east in the 1940s and quickly spread coast to coast. Its bubbly, warbling song is a familiar sound from backyard feeders to city balconies.
Fun Fact
Male House Finches get their red color from pigments in their food — the brighter the red, the healthier the bird.
