White-throated Sparrow

White-throated Sparrow

Zonotrichia albicollis

A handsome sparrow with bold black-and-white or tan-and-brown head stripes, a bright white throat patch, and a yellow spot between the eye and bill. Common across eastern North America, it winters in dense thickets and visits feeders readily. Its clear, whistled song — often described as "Oh sweet Canada Canada Canada" — is one of the most recognized bird songs in the north.

Fun Fact

White-throated Sparrows come in two color morphs — tan-striped and white-striped — and almost always mate with the opposite morph.
