European Starling

Sturnus vulgaris

Iridescent purple and green feathers speckled with white spots give the European Starling a jewel-like sheen up close. Native to Europe, it has been introduced worldwide and thrives in urban environments across North America and beyond. Enormous winter flocks called murmurations create mesmerizing, swirling aerial displays at dusk.

Fun Fact

All 200 million European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds released in Central Park in 1890.
