North Island Brown Kiwi

Apteryx mantelli

Flightless and roughly the size of a chicken, the North Island Brown Kiwi has hair-like brown feathers, a long curved bill with nostrils at the tip, and no visible tail. Endemic to New Zealand, it is nocturnal and probes forest floors for invertebrates using its keen sense of smell. For its body size, the kiwi lays one of the largest eggs relative to body weight of any bird.

Fun Fact

Kiwis have nostrils at the tip of their beak and can smell worms underground.
