A ghostly, ash-gray ground bird found only in the forests of New Caledonia, the Kagu has a shaggy crest, bright red legs, and an orange bill. Nearly flightless, it hunts insects, worms, and snails on the forest floor. Once close to extinction from introduced predators, it survives thanks to intensive conservation.
Fun Fact
It has unique 'nasal corns' — flaps that cover its nostrils to keep out soil while foraging, seen in no other bird.
