Weka
Gallirallus australis
A bold, flightless rail endemic to New Zealand, the Weka has brown plumage, sturdy legs, and an insatiable curiosity that leads it to investigate — and often steal from — campsites and picnic areas. It forages on the forest floor for invertebrates, seeds, and fruit. Despite its chicken-like appearance, it can be surprisingly aggressive in defense of territory.
Fun Fact
Wekas are notorious for stealing shiny objects and unattended food from campers.
