Downy Woodpecker

Dryobates pubescens

North America's smallest woodpecker, the Downy is a black-and-white charmer with a short, chisel-like bill and a red patch on the male's nape. Common in deciduous forests, orchards, and suburban backyards across the continent, it readily visits suet feeders. It often joins mixed-species flocks with chickadees and nuthatches in winter.

Fun Fact

Downy Woodpeckers drum on trees up to 15 times per second without getting headaches, thanks to skull adaptations.
