Eurasian Wryneck

Jynx torquilla

The Eurasian Wryneck is an unusual woodpecker relative that neither drums nor climbs tree trunks. Instead, this cryptically-patterned brown bird feeds almost exclusively on ants, using its long, sticky tongue to raid colonies on the ground. Its name comes from its bizarre defensive behavior of twisting its neck in snake-like movements when threatened.

Fun Fact

When threatened, the Wryneck twists its head and hisses like a snake.
