European Green Woodpecker
Picus viridis
The European Green Woodpecker is a large, eye-catching bird with bright green upperparts, a pale belly, and a vivid red crown. Found across Europe, it spends more time on the ground than most woodpeckers, using its long sticky tongue to feast on ants. Its loud, laughing call — known as a "yaffle" — rings out across parks and open woodlands.
Fun Fact
Unlike other woodpeckers, the Green Woodpecker rarely drums and feeds mostly on the ground.
