Great Spotted Woodpecker
Dendrocopos major
The most widespread woodpecker in Europe and Asia, the Great Spotted Woodpecker wears crisp black-and-white plumage with bright red patches under the tail and on the male's nape. It drums loudly on resonant branches to declare territory, producing rapid bursts audible from a distance. A versatile forager, it eats everything from wood-boring insects to pine seeds and bird eggs.
Fun Fact
This woodpecker drums on trees at 20 strikes per second to claim territory.
