Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus varius

Named for its habit of drilling orderly rows of small holes in tree bark to feed on sap and the insects it attracts, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is a migratory woodpecker of eastern North America. Males have a red throat and crown against a black-and-white patterned body. Its sap wells provide food not just for itself but for hummingbirds and other species.

Fun Fact

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers drill neat rows of tiny holes in trees to create sap wells — hummingbirds, warblers, and other birds freeload off their handiwork.
