Acorn Woodpecker

Melanerpes formicivorus

A clown-faced woodpecker of oak woodlands, the Acorn Woodpecker has a glossy black back, white face, and red crown, with pale staring eyes. It lives in noisy, cooperative family groups that share territory and young. Ranging from the western United States down through Central America to the Colombian Andes, it is famous for its communal acorn stores.

Fun Fact

Acorn Woodpeckers drill thousands of holes in a single 'granary tree,' wedging one acorn snugly into each.
