House Wren
Troglodytes aedon
Tiny but bursting with energy, the House Wren belts out a bubbling, cascading song that seems impossibly loud for its size. Plain brown all over with a perky cocked tail, it breeds across the Americas from Canada to Patagonia. It fiercely defends its territory, sometimes destroying the eggs of neighboring birds to claim nest sites.
Fun Fact
House Wrens are fierce territory defenders — they've been known to puncture the eggs of other birds nesting nearby to eliminate competition.
