Black-capped Chickadee
Poecile atricapillus
Tiny, energetic, and endlessly curious, the Black-capped Chickadee sports a bold black cap and bib against white cheeks and soft gray wings. A year-round resident across northern North America, it is a staple at backyard feeders. It can lower its body temperature at night to conserve energy and remembers the locations of thousands of hidden food items.
Fun Fact
Chickadees can lower their body temperature at night to save energy, entering a state called torpor.
