Helmeted Hornbill
Rhinoplax vigil
The Helmeted Hornbill is a massive bird of Southeast Asian rainforests, distinguished by a solid ivory-like casque atop its red bill that accounts for nearly ten percent of its body weight. Males use these casques in dramatic aerial jousts, clashing head-on in midair. Poaching for its casque — sometimes called "red ivory" — has made it critically endangered.
Fun Fact
The Helmeted Hornbill has a solid casque on its head that's denser than ivory.
