Wire-tailed Manakin
Pipra filicauda
The male Wire-tailed Manakin is a compact, vivid bird with a red head, black back, and bright yellow underparts, topped off with two wire-thin tail filaments. Found in forest edges and clearings across northern South America, males perform rapid-fire courtship dances on display perches. The wire tail tips are used to tickle a female's chin during displays.
Fun Fact
Male Wire-tailed Manakins tickle females under the chin with their unique filament-like tail feathers during an elaborate courtship dance.
