Rufous-tailed Jacamar

Rufous-tailed Jacamar

Galbula ruficauda

Glittering metallic green above with a rufous tail and warm cinnamon underparts, the Rufous-tailed Jacamar looks like a supersized hummingbird with a long, dagger-like bill. Found from Mexico to Brazil, it perches motionless on exposed branches before sallying out to snatch butterflies and dragonflies mid-flight. It beats prey against the perch to remove wings before eating.

Fun Fact

Rufous-tailed Jacamars snatch butterflies and dragonflies mid-flight, then beat them against a branch to remove the wings before swallowing — like a tiny, iridescent flycatcher.
