Great Blue Turaco
Corythaeola cristata
The Great Blue Turaco is a large, striking bird with cobalt-blue plumage, a yellow-and-red bill, and a tall black crest. Found in the forests of central and western Africa, it moves through the canopy with a distinctive bounding gait. Its feather pigments — turacin and turacoverdin — are unique copper-based colors found nowhere else in the animal kingdom.
Fun Fact
Turacos are the only birds with true green and red pigments — other birds achieve these colors through light refraction.
