Chinstrap Penguin

Pygoscelis antarcticus

Named for the thin black line running under its chin like a helmet strap, the Chinstrap Penguin breeds in huge colonies across Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands. These bold, noisy penguins are skilled rock-hopping climbers. They feed primarily on krill, often foraging closer to shore than other Antarctic penguin species.

Fun Fact

Chinstrap Penguins take thousands of microsleeps per day, each lasting just 4 seconds.
