Fiordland Penguin
Eudyptes pachyrhynchus
A shy, dark-crested penguin of New Zealand's remote southwestern coast, the Fiordland Penguin has distinctive yellow eyebrow stripes and white cheek streaks against its dark plumage. It breeds in dense temperate rainforest and coastal caves — one of the few penguins to nest among tree roots. Its population is estimated at only a few thousand breeding pairs.
