King Penguin
Aptenodytes patagonicus
The second-largest penguin species, the King Penguin stands about three feet tall with a sleek silver-gray back, white front, and vivid orange-gold patches on its head and upper chest. It breeds in enormous colonies on sub-Antarctic islands, sometimes numbering hundreds of thousands. Unlike most penguins, its breeding cycle takes over a year, meaning adults cannot breed every season.
Fun Fact
King Penguins incubate their eggs on top of their feet for 55 days to keep them off the frozen ground.
