Wood Thrush
Hylocichla mustelina
Widely considered to have one of the most beautiful songs in North America, the Wood Thrush produces flute-like, ethereal phrases that echo through eastern deciduous forests. Warm russet above with bold black spots on a white breast, it forages in leaf litter for insects. Sadly, its populations have declined steeply due to habitat fragmentation.
Fun Fact
Wood Thrushes can sing two notes at once using both sides of their syrinx, producing the hauntingly beautiful flute-like song that inspired Thoreau to write about it.
