Willow Ptarmigan
Lagopus lagopus
The Willow Ptarmigan performs one of nature's best costume changes — mottled brown in summer, pure white in winter — perfectly matched to its arctic and subarctic habitat. Found across northern North America and Eurasia, it is the state bird of Alaska. Males are fiercely territorial, standing their ground even against much larger predators.
