Greater Sage-Grouse
Centrocercus urophasianus
The male Greater Sage-Grouse performs one of North America's most spectacular courtship displays, inflating twin yellow air sacs on its chest and fanning its spiky tail feathers while strutting on communal leks. Found across sagebrush steppe of the western United States and Canada, it depends entirely on sagebrush for food and cover. Habitat loss has made it a major conservation concern.
Fun Fact
Male Sage-Grouse inflate yellow air sacs on their chest and make a bizarre popping sound to attract females.
