Standard-winged Nightjar
Caprimulgus longipennis
During breeding season, the male Standard-winged Nightjar sprouts two extraordinary long wing feathers — bare shafts ending in broad pennant-like flags — that trail behind in display flights. Found in African savannas south of the Sahara, this nocturnal insectivore is nearly invisible on the ground by day. The bizarre plumes are shed after breeding.
Fun Fact
Males grow a single 15-inch flight feather on each wing during breeding season like a streamer.
