Tiny and iridescent, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird weighs less than a nickel, with the male flashing a brilliant crimson throat patch in the right light. It breeds across eastern North America and winters in Central America. Remarkably, many individuals cross the entire Gulf of Mexico nonstop during migration.
