Anna's Hummingbird

Calypte anna

A year-round resident of the Pacific coast, Anna's Hummingbird is one of the few hummingbirds that don't migrate. Males sport a brilliant iridescent magenta crown and throat that blazes in sunlight. They perform spectacular dive displays, plummeting from heights of over 100 feet and producing a loud chirp with their tail feathers at the bottom of the arc.

Fun Fact

Anna's Hummingbirds dive at 385 body lengths per second — faster than a fighter jet relative to size.
