Herring Gull
Larus argentatus
The classic "seagull" of northern shores, the Herring Gull is a large, pink-legged gull with a pale grey mantle and yellow bill bearing a red spot. Found across the Northern Hemisphere, it thrives in coastal cities, landfills, and harbors. Highly intelligent and opportunistic, it drops shellfish from height to crack them open on hard surfaces.
Fun Fact
Herring Gull chicks instinctively peck at the red spot on their parent's bill to trigger feeding — one of the most famous discoveries in animal behavior.
