Great White Pelican

Pelecanus onocrotalus

One of the largest flying birds, the Great White Pelican boasts white plumage, a massive bill with an expandable throat pouch, and a wingspan exceeding nine feet. It breeds across southeastern Europe, Asia, and Africa in large, noisy colonies. Groups often fish cooperatively, herding fish into shallow water before scooping them up.

Fun Fact

A pelican's throat pouch can hold up to 3 gallons of water — three times more than its stomach.
