Indigo Bunting

Indigo Bunting

Passerina cyanea

In full sunlight, the male Indigo Bunting glows an electric, almost impossibly vivid blue, though the color is entirely structural — without light, the feathers appear black. Found across eastern North America in brushy edges and overgrown fields, it migrates to Central America for winter. It navigates by the stars, using the rotation of constellations around Polaris.

Fun Fact

Indigo Buntings navigate during migration using the stars.
