Horned Screamer

Anhima cornuta

Looking like something from a prehistoric era, the Horned Screamer is a massive marshland bird of tropical South America with a long, bony horn projecting from its forehead. Black and white plumage and powerful legs give it a turkey-like appearance. Despite its bulk, it soars effortlessly on thermals and its booming calls carry for miles across wetlands.

Fun Fact

Horned Screamers have a bizarre cartilage horn on their forehead, air-filled spongy bones, and calls so thunderous they can be heard over two miles away.
