Hooded Merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus

A small, fish-eating diving duck of wooded swamps and ponds, the male Hooded Merganser can raise a spectacular black-and-white fan-shaped crest. It has a thin, serrated bill perfect for gripping slippery fish and crayfish. Females are warm brown with a shaggy cinnamon crest.
