Common Loon
Gavia immer
With its striking black-and-white checkered back and haunting, yodel-like calls, the Common Loon is an icon of northern lakes. Found across Canada and the northern United States, it dives deep to catch fish and can stay submerged for over a minute. Its eerie calls carry for miles across still water.
Fun Fact
Loon calls are so haunting they're used in movies to create an eerie wilderness atmosphere.
