Bearded Reedling
Panurus biarmicus
A charismatic ball of orange-brown fluff with a long tail, the Bearded Reedling — also called the Bearded Tit — bounces between reed stems in marshes across Europe and Asia. Males sport a distinctive black drooping mustache. It is the only species in its family, an evolutionary one-off with no close living relatives.
Fun Fact
Bearded Reedlings can reshape their digestive system between seasons — their guts enlarge in winter for a seed diet, then shrink in summer when they switch to insects.
