Splendid Fairywren
Malurus splendens
The breeding male Splendid Fairywren is a tiny burst of electric cobalt blue with a black mask and breast band, often called one of Australia's most beautiful birds. Found across arid and semi-arid scrublands of Australia, it lives in cooperative groups where helpers assist with raising chicks. Outside breeding season, males molt to dull brown, like females.
Fun Fact
Males are a vivid electric blue but turn dull brown outside of breeding season.
